Here is a little more information on what we are trying to do.
I received your contact information from Jeff LaFave, VP of
Livingston Gun Club. Jeff has been an enormous help in accelerating the
Michigan Youth Hunt Program statewide.
2008 will be the Third Annual
Michigan Youth Hunt Contest. Having a vision to give back to our youth
and provide them with a unique opportunity has become a dream come true.
Helping pass on our hunting heritage to the next generation is our focus.
Teaching a youth the proper ethics of hunting, how to scout for deer sign and
explaining the importance of their role to keep the sport alive by being a
good sportsman or women.
The idea is, to have each Sportsman’s or Gun Club or Organization to take a
youth hunter out each year. With a united vision to help our youth, I believe
we can achieve this goal. We are in the process of contacting these clubs and
obtaining their support. We are also looking into contacting all the Hunter
Safety Instructors to inform students of the program.
The program is posted on every sporting website we can find! The kids send in
a small essay stating why they think they should be picked for this hunt. All
entries are posted online, (without their contact information.) The only
stipulation is they must not have harvested a deer before. On September 1st
the winners are posted online and e-mailed.
In the past each youth hunter has been responsible for transportation,
license, food and lodging. If they didn’t have a rifle, two small caliber
rifles were available along with the proper ammo. There is no cost (zero) for
the actual hunt, usage of the rifle or ammo.
This program helps get our youth off the couch and in the woods. Jeff has
e-mailed me, informing me that you may some great leads for some possible help
with the program. If you could e-mail me back that information, with the name
and contact information, it would be appreciated.
Our goal is to make available 83 youth hunts in 2008, one for each county.
Having each county represented by its sportsman’s, gun or an organization in
that county.
